A Brief History of Shorewood
Long before European settlers arrived, the Dakota people lived, fished, and hunted along the shores of Lake Minnetonka, a lake they knew as a place of abundance. After the treaties of the early 1850s opened land west of the Mississippi River, settlers began arriving in the area, drawn by fertile soil, dense hardwood forests, and the lake’s natural beauty.
One of the area’s most notable early residents was Peter Gideon, a horticulturist who settled along the lake in the 1850s. Determined to grow fruit that could survive harsh Minnesota winters, Gideon developed the Wealthy apple in the late 1860s, naming it after his wife. His work helped launch Minnesota’s apple industry, and Gideon’s Bay still carries his name today.
By the late 1800s, railroads and steamboats transformed Lake Minnetonka into a popular summer destination. Grand hotels and resorts attracted visitors from across the country, and the south shore became a favorite retreat for Twin Cities families escaping the city heat.
As the 20th century progressed, summer cottages gave way to year-round homes. In 1956, residents incorporated the Village of Shorewood from parts of the former Excelsior Township. Today, the city remains a peaceful residential community that values its lakes, wetlands, and open green spaces.
